Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport has approved a 20-year master plan to expand terminal capacity, upgrade cargo infrastructure, and improve landside facilities as demand continues to rise. The plan outlines phased development through 2042, with projects tied to projected increases in passenger and cargo traffic.
The airport expects passenger volumes to grow by just over 2% annually over the next two decades, alongside a 2.8% annual increase in cargo activity. To accommodate this growth, the plan prioritizes expansion of the B Concourse, where the airport will add gates, increase TSA screening capacity, and upgrade baggage handling systems. The expansion will also create additional space for concessions and passenger services, supporting higher throughput while maintaining operational efficiency.
The airport will also expand landside infrastructure, starting with the addition of 268 parking spaces in summer 2026. Longer-term options include a larger surface lot closer to the terminal and the development of a new parking garage, both under evaluation as part of the phased program. The airport approved the master plan in March 2026 and will deliver projects in phases through 2042.
On the airside and cargo front, the airport will upgrade taxiways, aircraft parking areas, and cargo handling infrastructure. Initial construction on these upgrades will begin in summer 2026. Funding will come primarily from Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grants, along with airport-generated revenue.
