The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has selected a joint venture of Skanska, Traylor Bros., and Walsh Construction to deliver a $1.02 billion segment of the Second Avenue Subway expansion in Manhattan.

The contract advances Phase II of the project, which will extend Q line service from 96th Street to 125th Street. The expansion will bring new subway access to East Harlem while creating additional connections to regional transit services.

Under the design-build contract, the joint venture will construct station structures near 106th Street, connect new infrastructure to existing tunnels, perform excavation work, relocate utilities, and build station entrance facilities. The team will also install temporary roadway decking to maintain traffic during construction. Mott MacDonald will provide design services.

The project builds on the first phase of the Second Avenue Subway, which opened in 2017 and extended service to 96th Street. The full Phase II program will add stations at 106th Street, 116th Street, and 125th Street. The extension is expected to improve transit access in Upper Manhattan and reduce pressure on the heavily used Lexington Avenue Line.

Construction is scheduled to reach substantial completion in the third quarter of 2030.
