The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has ordered 73 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from New Flyer of America Inc. The $64 million order includes 50 forty-foot and 23 sixty-foot heavy-duty transit buses.
The procurement forms part of a five-year contract signed in 2022. The new buses will replace end-of-life vehicles and expand fleet capacity. The order was added to NFI Group’s backlog in the fourth quarter of 2025.
New Flyer will manufacture and deliver the buses through its U.S. operations. The vehicles meet Buy America requirements and support domestic manufacturing and supply chains. Contract terms beyond the existing agreement have not been disclosed. The new buses will improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions through CNG technology. They will support MTS’s fixed-route network and regional transit services across San Diego County. Deployment timelines have not been specified.
MTS operates nearly 100 bus routes and four light rail lines, serving more than 80 million annual passenger trips. The fleet upgrade will enhance service reliability and maintain transit capacity for approximately three million residents.
