New York has awarded $43.2 million to local governments to improve roadway safety across the state. The funding will support projects that reduce lane departure crashes through upgrades such as guide rails, pavement markings, shoulder widening, warning signs, barriers, lighting, and rumble strips.
NYSDOT will distribute the funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program. The awards represent the second round of funding under the state’s Safe System Approach Toward Zero Deaths initiative. New York awarded an initial $32 million in December 2025 and has invested more than $75 million in local roadway safety projects since 2025.
Projects will be carried out across the Capital Region, Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York City, and the North Country. Local governments will install new safety infrastructure, develop Local Roads Safety Plans, widen shoulders, improve pavement markings, and upgrade lighting at high-risk intersections and road curves. The improvements target roadway departure crashes, which account for 44% of traffic fatalities in New York.
