The California High-Speed Rail Authority has launched the procurement process for a $2.4 billion construction contract to extend the state’s high-speed rail network from Merced to Madera. The contract will cover a 34-mile section of the future rail corridor and expand active construction in the Central Valley.
The selected contractor will build earthworks, bridges, and other structures, while completing roadway improvements along the route. The authority will use a collaborative design-build model and plans to select two bidding teams before awarding the contract. Construction is expected to begin in late 2027 and continue through 2030.
Work continues on other sections of the project. Crews are building 171 miles of the rail system between Merced and Bakersfield, while track installation on the initial operating segment is scheduled to begin later this year. More than 80 miles of guideway have already been completed.
The board also approved a procurement to identify a private partner that can help supply clean electricity for future rail operations. The selected partner will evaluate energy projects and commercial opportunities before any long-term agreement moves forward.
