Metro has received a $50.3 million federal grant to replace aging buses with 50 new 40-foot diesel-electric hybrid vehicles. The Federal Transit Administration awarded the funding through the FY 2025 Low or No-Emission Grant Program to support fleet modernization across the National Capital Region.

The new buses will replace vehicles that have exceeded their useful life and will operate throughout Metro’s service area. The investment aims to improve service reliability, reduce emissions, and support long-term fleet renewal. The program provides federal support for transit agencies upgrading bus fleets and improving essential infrastructure.
