CDOT Completes Rockfall and Slope Stabilization Work on U.S. 550 Coal Bank Pass

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has completed a rockfall mitigation and roadway stabilization project on U.S. 550 between Durango and Silverton. The work addressed multiple slope hazards at Coal Bank Pass and Deer Creek.

At Mile Point 56.9, crews replaced an aging retaining wall under the highway. Construction required excavation shoring to maintain soil stability. CDOT also installed a new culvert near the summit.

At Mile Point 59.3, the Deer Creek site received rock removal, slope excavation, and a permanent steel-post rockfall catchment barrier. The barrier prevents debris from reaching the roadway.

Between both sites, at Mile Point 57.4, crews installed anchored mesh netting over a 750-foot cliff section to stabilize the northbound lane. Final work included guardrail upgrades, milling, paving, and new striping.
