NJ Transit has issued a request for proposals to prepare the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the planned 10-mile extension of the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County. The study will evaluate environmental conditions and advance project design requirements.
The extension would run from the existing terminus at Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen to a proposed terminal at Englewood Hospital. Plans include seven new stations across North Bergen, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, and Englewood. Service would operate on West Side Avenue and along existing CSX right-of-way between 91st Street and Englewood’s northern border.
The DEIS is required after the Federal Transit Administration rescinded the project’s prior Notice of Intent in 2023 due to updated floodplain, stormwater, and air-quality considerations. NJ Transit determined that a new contract was necessary to address the expanded scope of environmental review.
The project aims to expand light-rail access in one of New Jersey’s most densely populated corridors.
