The Commonwealth of Virginia has allocated $20 million from the Transportation Partnership Opportunity Fund (TPOF) to support the I-64 Exit 211 Interchange Improvement Project in New Kent County. The funding was approved in May and advanced to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for action at its June meeting.
The $94 million project involves constructing a new two-lane bridge parallel to the existing Route 106 bridge over I-64 and converting the interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Planned improvements include widening and realigning ramps, expanding Route 106 from a three-lane undivided to a four-lane divided roadway, and adding a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project will support regional growth near the Port of Virginia and accommodate major developments such as AutoZone and Target distribution centers, the planned Buc-ee’s travel center, and the mixed-use Farms of New Kent development.
Funding was recommended by the Secretary of Transportation and the Secretary of Commerce and Trade under statutory authority granted to the Governor for supporting infrastructure linked to economic development.
