Construction will begin in October on a $42 million infrastructure upgrade along a four-block segment of 17th Street in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The project will replace deteriorated stormwater systems and improve sidewalks and road conditions between Pacific and Cypress avenues.
The street, part of the historic Oceanfront area and the ViBe Creative District, contains infrastructure dating back to the 1930s. The improvements are expected to enhance drainage capacity and pedestrian access along the corridor.
The city is funding the project through its Tourism Investment Program, which is supported by portions of hotel, meal, amusement, cigarette, and flat-rate hotel taxes. Phase II of the corridor improvements, extending to Birdneck Road, is not yet funded.
Initial construction will focus on installing underground utility infrastructure, requiring partial closures. Businesses in the area will remain open and accessible during the work.
Completion is expected in approximately four years. The project aims to support long-term economic activity, improve public safety, and modernize essential infrastructure in a key commercial district.
