Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) commenced two significant light rail transit (LRT) projects on January 2, 2025, aimed at enhancing system reliability and safety.

The first project involves plinth repairs and replacements on sections of the Downtown LRT, with work continuing through to March 2025. This project will proceed in two phases, temporarily suspending service between the Steel Plaza and Gateway stations and closing Wood Street Station. South Hills services will terminate at Penn Station, which will serve as a temporary stop along the East Busway. Shuttle buses will run every 10 minutes between Penn Station and Gateway Station, and a subway local rail car will operate every 10 minutes between Gateway and Allegheny stations.

The second initiative is a three-year rail-grinding project, conducted in partnership with RailWorks, to restore rail profiles, reduce wear, and improve ride quality. The $1.5 million project will focus on sections, including South Hills Village to Washington Junction, with work scheduled annually from January to March until 2027. Single-tracking will be implemented during these operations to maintain station accessibility. PRT encourages riders to review adjusted schedules and to plan ahead for alternative travel options during the implementation of these projects.
