The Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority have begun construction on the SR 400 Express Lanes project, a major mobility initiative in the Atlanta metropolitan region. The project will expand capacity along a key transportation corridor through a long-term public-private partnership.
The project scope includes construction of 16 miles of barrier-separated, dynamically priced express lanes in both directions along State Route 400. The corridor extends from the North Springs Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority station in Fulton County to McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County. The project also includes interchange upgrades, new bridges, corridor-wide traffic management systems, and integration with planned bus rapid transit infrastructure.
The total project cost is approximately $10.8 billion. The financing structure includes federal credit assistance through a TIFIA loan, tax-exempt private activity bonds, and committed private equity investment. The project is being delivered by the SR 400 Peach Partners consortium, which includes ACS Infra (IRIDIUM), Acciona, and Meridiam as developers and equity sponsors. FlatironDragados and Acciona are leading construction, with Parsons serving as lead design engineer.
Construction is underway following the April 2026 groundbreaking. Crews have initiated site mobilization, utility coordination, and early construction activities across the corridor. The project will be delivered in phases over an estimated 5.5-year construction period, with completion expected in 2031.
The project will improve travel reliability, reduce congestion, and enhance safety along one of the region’s busiest corridors.
