Skanska has secured a $1 billion design-build contract from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to replace the North Station Draw One Bridge and upgrade associated rail infrastructure across Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, Massachusetts.
The project will replace the existing 1930-era bascule bridges with new vertical lift spans across the Charles River. The scope also includes upgrades to approach trestles, construction of a new Tower A control facility, integrated track and signal improvements, Positive Train Control (PTC) upgrades, and support for the addition of a new Platform F at North Station.
The project will expand rail capacity across the Charles River from four tracks to six. MBTA expects the upgrades to improve network resiliency and maintain uninterrupted commuter rail and Amtrak operations during construction.
Skanska will implement Alternative Technical Concepts (ATCs) to reduce in-water construction activities, simplify project staging, and improve safety conditions. The contractor also aims to minimize disruptions for more than 100,000 daily riders using the MBTA north-side rail network.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2026, with completion expected in fall 2032.
