The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) has awarded a $1 billion contract to the Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture for construction of the Long Bridge North Project, a major upgrade to the regional and national rail network in the Washington, D.C. area. Construction is set to begin in July 2025 and is expected to be completed by Q4 2030.

The project is the first phase of the larger 1.8-mile Long Bridge Project, which will replace the existing two-track corridor with a four-track rail system stretching from East Potomac Park to the L’Enfant Interlocking in Washington, D.C. The new western tracks will serve Amtrak’s long-distance and state-supported passenger services as well as Virginia Railway Express (VRE), while the refurbished eastern tracks will continue to support CSX Transportation freight operations.

The joint venture’s scope includes building linked modern rail bridges, improving corridor capacity, and minimizing disruption along the critical D.C.–Virginia rail artery. The project is being delivered in collaboration with Amtrak, CSXT, VRE, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the National Park Service (NPS), and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
