Sacramento County has approved a $415 million expansion at Sacramento International Airport as part of the ongoing $1.3 billion SMForward capital program.
This phase will add six gates to Concourse B, increasing its total to 25, and includes upgrades to baggage handling systems in both Terminals A and B. Terminal B may also receive new baggage carousels.
SMForward is a multi-year initiative aimed at increasing capacity and improving passenger facilities at the airport. In addition to terminal improvements, the broader program includes a new pedestrian walkway, a parking structure at Terminal B, a consolidated rental car facility, and an upgraded ground transportation center.
The $400 million rental car facility is expected to open by late 2027, coinciding with the completion of other major components of the program. Construction of the Terminal B parking garage began in October 2024 and is scheduled for completion by fall 2026. Once finished, the structure will provide 5,500 parking spaces and generate an estimated 1,000 construction jobs.
Work is also underway on a pedestrian walkway connecting Terminal B to Concourse B. Spanning a quarter mile, the enclosed structure will include moving sidewalks, escalators, and public art features. It is expected to open by the end of 2025.
