The Port of Los Angeles has secured approximately $70 million in federal funding from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (HMTF) to advance critical harbor infrastructure projects. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers allocated the funding as part of a broader $131.8 million distribution to the San Pedro Bay port complex.
The project scope includes dredging, seismic safety upgrades, wharf and fender repairs, pile replacements, sediment removal and remediation, and improvements to slips and navigation channels. These upgrades will strengthen port infrastructure and maintain safe and efficient vessel operations.
Congress appropriated $3.245 billion in HMTF funding for Fiscal Year 2026, including $416.8 million designated for donor and energy ports under the Water Resources Development Act. The HMTF is funded through a 0.125% tax on imported cargo. The allocation reflects reforms introduced in 2020 to ensure more equitable distribution of funds to major cargo ports.
The Port of Los Angeles will implement the projects using federal funding in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The port has identified more than $6 billion in eligible maintenance and repair projects. Priority projects include berth repairs, seismic retrofits, and marine oil terminal improvements.
