Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Kyoto Fusioneering have formed a partnership to develop fusion testing infrastructure aimed at advancing commercial fusion energy deployment.
The collaboration focuses on developing UNITY-3, a tritium breeding blanket test facility to be located at ORNL. The facility will support testing and validation of breeding blanket systems under fusion-relevant nuclear conditions, a capability identified as a critical gap in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fusion Science & Technology Roadmap.
ORNL will contribute expertise in fusion research, materials science, advanced manufacturing, and experimental infrastructure. Kyoto Fusioneering will contribute engineering capabilities and testing experience through its UNITY program, which includes existing facilities in Japan and Canada.
The partners will begin joint research and development activities immediately. The announcement did not disclose project cost, funding amounts, construction schedules, or an expected operational date.
The facility is intended to support fusion developers by reducing technical risk associated with tritium fuel production systems and by advancing technology readiness for future fusion pilot plants.
