The Ohio Department of Development, through BroadbandOhio, has awarded nearly $23.7 million to internet service providers (ISPs) to offset infrastructure costs and expand broadband access across 23 counties. Funding was granted under the state’s Broadband Pole Replacement and Undergrounding Program.

Six ISPs submitted 67 successful applications in this third round of funding, which covers 1,333 pole replacements and 3,622 underground fiber installations. The program reimburses providers for up to 75 per cent of eligible infrastructure costs, capped at $7,500 per pole. It supports essential broadband construction in unserved areas of the state.

Key reimbursements include:

  • Ohio Gig: $18.5 million across six applications for work in Belmont, Delaware, Union, Hardin, Clinton, and Warren counties
  • Charter Communications: $3.04 million across 22 applications for work in 13 counties
  • South Central Power: $1.44 million across 33 applications in Belmont, Monroe, Highland, and Harrison counties

Created by House Bill 33 of the 135th General Assembly, the program is non-competitive and reimburses ISPs for eligible work completed since July 1, 2023. Reimbursements cover trenching, directional boring, conduit installation, and related expenses. Funding will remain available until exhausted or through June 1, 2029.
