Norfolk Southern (NS) has completed infrastructure improvements worth $1 billion across its 22-state network in 2024. Norfolk Southern’s Engineering team completed key infrastructure projects, including:

Safety Infrastructure

  • Constructed and activated 5 Digital Train Inspection portals
  • Installed 313 grade crossing protection warning systems
  • Added 130 hot box/bearing detectors, 17 acoustic bearing detectors, and 29 hot wheel detectors
  • Completed 140 public improvement projects

Track, Bridges, and Structures

  • Replaced 558 track miles of rail and installed 2.1 million cross ties
  • Surfaced 4,202 miles of track and replaced 30,480 bridge ties
  • Installed 553 panel turnouts and replaced 43 bridges
  • Rehabilitated 78 bridges and installed 104 culverts

Communications and Signals

  • Completed 23 signal cut-ins and replaced 180 switch machines
  • Upgraded 869 CTC to ITCMS systems
  • Replaced 3 classification yard speed controllers and upgraded 3 moveable bridge PLC systems.
