The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) Board of Commissioners has awarded a $1.8 billion contract to Frontier-Kemper-Tutor-Perini JV for the Manhattan Tunnel Project. The board has also authorized the notice to commence construction works and approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) linked to the project.

The works include the excavation of approximately 550,000 cubic yards of material and the installation of a 900-foot-long concrete tunnel box to accommodate future rail tracks. Construction is expected to commence in the coming months and is projected to be completed by 2029.

Funding agreements of $16 billion come from a mix of federal, state, and local sources, with strong support from Amtrak and New Jersey Transit Corporation (New Jersey Transit).
