Norfolk Southern and the Port of Virginia have established the country’s first RailGreen Corridor, introducing a verified emissions reduction option for freight moved between Norfolk Harbor and the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal. The corridor is part of Norfolk Southern’s RailGreen program, which enables cargo owners to offset supply chain emissions through the purchase of certificates linked to the railroad’s use of low-carbon biofuels.

The service applies to cargo transported via Norfolk Southern’s daily rail operations between the Virginia Inland Port and marine terminals in Norfolk. Each RailGreen certificate corresponds to a quantified emissions reduction achieved through verified use of alternative fuels.

The program targets Scope 3 emissions—those occurring in supply chains beyond a company’s direct operations—and offers shippers a formal mechanism to account for and reduce transportation-related emissions.
