CBC’s new report, No Fare: The Costs of MTA Fare and Toll Evasion, finds that:
- Fare and toll evasion cost the MTA approximately $1 billion in 2024;
- The MTA, with the partnership of the NYPD and the State, is starting to stem evasion. The 2025 loss is projected to be $900 million, even though ridership is increasing. That’s still huge, equivalent to 3 rounds of fare and toll increases;
- Much more progress is needed—to help close the MTA $800 million structural budget gap, ensure all users pay their fair share, and increase the public’s confidence in the system.
- Increased enforcement has helped reduce evasion but is not the sole solution. Also critical are investments in fare-securing equipment, new collection strategies like proof of payment, and ensuring those eligible for Fair Fares NYC can be enrolled
