The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) plans to rehabilitate the city-owned section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The approximately $4 billion project will cover 1.5 miles between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street in Brooklyn.
NYC DOT will repair the highway’s concrete structure and triple cantilever. The agency will also upgrade drainage, railings, and lighting. The work will extend the section’s design life by approximately 40 years.
The city plans to begin construction in 2030 and complete the 10-year rehabilitation in 2040. NYCDOT will start the environmental review process in fall 2026. The agency expects to complete the environmental impact statement by summer 2028.
About 130,000 vehicles use this section of the BQE each day, including approximately 13,000 trucks. The temporary routes will limit traffic diversions onto local streets and maintain freight movement through the corridor. The project will also preserve access to Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade during most construction phases.
