The New Mexico Environment Department has launched a statewide satellite-based water leak detection program aimed at identifying and repairing leaks in rural drinking water systems.
The program, known as LeakTracer, uses radar-based satellite data and artificial intelligence to detect underground leaks in water distribution systems. The technology allows utilities to identify leaks more quickly and target repairs in areas that are difficult to monitor through traditional methods.
The department developed the program in partnership with ASTERRA and McKim & Creed. LeakTracer is available at no cost to rural water systems serving fewer than 20,000 customers that participate in the state’s Rural Infrastructure Loan Program. Participating systems remain responsible for the cost of repairs once leaks are identified.
A pilot phase conducted in five New Mexico communities verified nearly 80 leaks and reduced water losses by an estimated 345,000 gallons per day. State officials report that aging infrastructure causes some rural systems to lose between 40% and 70% of treated drinking water.
