The Maryland Economic Development Corporation has secured $39.7 million in federal funding to expand freight handling capacity at Tradepoint Atlantic within the Port of Baltimore. The investment will support development of the Sparrows Point Container Terminal and increase cargo throughput at the port.
The project scope includes construction of a new container terminal and expansion of cargo handling infrastructure at the former Sparrows Point industrial site. The development will increase container capacity in Baltimore by approximately 70% and improve efficiency for cargo movement and storage.
The U.S. Maritime Administration is providing $39.7 million through the Port Infrastructure Development Program, funded under IIJA. The project is in the development phase as part of ongoing efforts to redevelop the Sparrows Point site into a logistics and manufacturing hub. Officials have not announced a construction completion date.
The project will create approximately 1,100 port-related jobs and support an additional 7,000 jobs tied to port activity. It will also strengthen supply chain capacity and position the Port of Baltimore as a major container gateway on the US East Coast.
