The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has presented an ambitious plan to modernize and expand Atlanta’s transit system. The key infrastructure projects are aimed at improving service reliability, sustainability, and passenger experience, as the city’s population is projected to increase from 6 million to 8 million by 2050.

System Upgrades and Expansion Projects

Several major initiatives have been implemented to modernize MARTA’s infrastructure and improve overall service, including:

  • CQ400 railcars: The testing of the new state-of-the-art trains will begin this year. The trains feature modernized interiors, improved accessibility, and enhanced safety features.
  • Communications-based train control (CBTC): This advanced signaling system will improve rail safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Zero-emissions vehicles: The new MARTA rapid bus rapid transit (BRT) fleet, featuring wireless charging and ADA-friendly platforms, will debut in 2025 along the Summerhill corridor.
  • NextGen bus network: A redesigned bus system will expand frequent service routes from five to 18 corridors, increasing the 15–minute service coverage by 245 per cent. The plan also includes consistent seven-day service and 12 on-demand transit zones.
  • Fare payment upgrades: The AFC 2.0 system will allow riders to use credit cards, smartphones, and smartwatches for seamless payments, while upgraded fare gates will enhance security and accessibility.

Ongoing Expansion Efforts

MARTA is undergoing its largest expansion in decades, with several projects underway:

  • New MARTA Rapid Lines: Construction on the Summerhill BRT line is progressing, with additional routes planned for Campbellton Road, Southlake, and SR-54.
  • Transit hubs: New facilities in Clayton County, South DeKalb, and Stonecrest will enhance connectivity for bus passengers.
  • Station modernization: MARTA is investing $1 billion to upgrade all 38 rail stations, with a major redevelopment of Five Points Station planned to create a more open and welcoming environment.
