The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has approved $1 billion for the final phase of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP) Roadway Improvement Project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The work is part of Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) $30 billion capital improvement program.
The project will reconfigure 4.4 miles of roadway around airport entrances and exits. Construction includes new and modified roadways, bridges, retaining walls, drainage systems, utility relocations, lighting, signage, landscaping, and intelligent transportation systems. LAWA plans to complete inbound roadway work before the 2028 Olympic Games and finish outbound roadways by 2030.
The reconfiguration aims to separate airport-bound traffic from local circulation and reduce congestion on streets such as Sepulveda and Century boulevards. LAWA reports the project will remove more than 500 vehicles from Sepulveda Boulevard at peak times by shifting traffic to new elevated access routes.
Skanska–Flatiron Joint Venture will deliver the final construction package. The contractor must meet local hiring requirements established by LAWA.
The project completed environmental review in 2021 under CEQA and NEPA. LAWA reports it has conducted more than 150 stakeholder meetings since 2019 related to the roadway plan.
