Indiana American Water has placed a new drinking water treatment system into operation at its Charlestown water treatment plant, marking the first PFAS treatment installation in a public water system in Indiana. The utility selected the facility because the original plant design allowed for future treatment upgrades.
The project added a granular activated carbon filtration system designed to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from drinking water. The nearly $6 million upgrade went online in December 2025 and integrates with the $16 million water treatment plant commissioned at the site in 2022.
Indiana American Water financed the project through Indiana’s State Revolving Fund Loan Program. The scope includes filtration vessels as well as supporting pumps, piping, electrical systems, and controls.
The Charlestown system serves approximately 3,000 customer connections, representing about 8,000 residents and businesses. The facility also supplies a portion of its daily production to the Marysville-Otisco Nabb Water Corporation.
