Indiana American Water has broken ground on a new $50 million water treatment facility in Seymour, Indiana. The new plant will replace the city’s more than century-old water treatment infrastructure and is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

The project will nearly double Seymour’s current average daily water demand capacity. The new facility will have an initial treatment capacity of 4.5 million gallons per day (MGD), with the ability to expand to 6 MGD as community needs grow.

Key components of the project include:

  • Advanced filtration systems to improve water quality and taste
  • Modern chemical feed and disinfection systems to meet evolving water quality standards
  • Centralized digital monitoring for real-time operational oversight
  • Emergency backup power systems for continuous operation
  • Upgraded wellfield infrastructure and a new raw water main to improve supply resilience

The existing plant, located in the floodway of the East Fork of the White River, has experienced over 400 days of flooding in the past decade, including five major events. The new facility is sited and designed to mitigate those risks and improve long-term service reliability.

Construction is being delivered through a design-build model by Reynolds Construction. Of the total $50 million project cost, approximately $42 million is allocated for the construction and design of the treatment plant, and $8 million for raw water infrastructure and wellfield improvements.

The new plant is part of Indiana American Water’s broader effort to modernize aging infrastructure and ensure safe, reliable water service for its customers across the state.
