The Hudson Tunnel Project, an initiative designed to enhance rail connectivity between New York and New Jersey, is scheduled to be completed by 2035. The project, which is a key component of the Gateway Program, aims to modernize and expand rail capacity along the Northeast Corridor.

Significant progress has been made on various phases of the project, including the construction of a new two-track tunnel under the Hudson River and the rehabilitation of the existing North River Tunnels, which suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The new tunnel is expected to improve service reliability, reduce delays, and provide a long-term solution to the corridor’s aging infrastructure.

The project is being managed by the Gateway Development Commission (GDC), with substantial funding support from federal, state, and local sources. The Biden Administration had prioritized the Hudson Tunnel Project as a key investment in the nation’s infrastructure, committing billions of dollars under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), 2021. The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately $16 billion, with the federal government expected to contribute a significant portion of the funding.
