The final phase of the North Aurora Road Improvement Project in Naperville will begin the week of September 29, 2025. The $52 million phase focuses on replacing the 110-year-old Canadian National/Wisconsin Central Railroad bridge and upgrading surrounding infrastructure.

The new bridge will span five traffic lanes and include a multi-use trail and sidewalk. Additional improvements include roadway lighting, increased vertical clearance, and a new pump station to improve drainage. Early work involves land clearing and construction of a temporary bridge to maintain rail service.

The project, led by the City of Naperville in partnership with the City of Aurora and the Naperville Township Road District, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. A detour will be implemented in spring 2026 to accommodate bridge removal, reconstruction, and gas pipeline relocation.

Funding includes $25 million from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Surface Transportation Program and $15 million from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund. Local governments have contributed about $6.5 million toward engineering, land acquisition, and utility coordination.
