The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has released an additional $250 million to the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) for its Skyline passenger rail system, following an amended full funding grant agreement (FFGA) signed in February 2024.
The original FFGA, signed in 2012, allocated $1.55 billion in grant funding for Honolulu’s transit-rail project. The amended FFGA outlines milestones for the release of those funds. In February, the D$OT provided an initial $125 million to HART. The latest $250 million release coincides with HART finalizing the contract award for the City Center Guideway and Stations extension construction package for the Skyline. To date, HART has received over $1.1 billion in federal funding for the project, with more than $364 million expected as HART meets additional milestones specified in the grant agreement.
Skyline service launched in June 2023, covering 11 miles between the East Kapolei and Aloha Stadium stations. HART is currently installing the second segment, connecting Aloha Stadium to the Middle Street Transit Center, with completion projected for the first quarter of 2025.
