CSX has awarded a $670 million contract to Wabtec to upgrade its freight locomotive fleet. The agreement covers new locomotive procurement, modernization of existing units, and deployment of digital operating systems. CSX will add 100 new Evolution Series locomotives and modernize 50 existing units as part of the program.
The contract expands CSX’s active fleet renewal strategy across its core freight corridors. The new locomotives will enter long-haul and heavy-duty service. CSX will use the additional capacity to support network operations as traffic levels fluctuate.
The modernization work will convert aging D9 locomotives from DC to AC traction. The upgrades will extend service life and standardize fleet systems. CSX will also enable advanced diagnostics and control technologies across the modernized units.
The agreement includes digital systems to manage fuel use and train handling. CSX will install Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton across the new and upgraded fleet. Deliveries of new locomotives will begin in 2026, with modernized units scheduled for delivery starting in 2027.
