CPS Energy has entered into a spectrum purchase agreement with Anterix Inc. to deploy a 900 MHz private wireless broadband network to support electric grid operations.

The agreement enables CPS Energy to build a utility-owned communications network designed for mission-critical applications. The network will support grid automation, outage detection and restoration, real-time operational monitoring, and field communications across CPS Energy’s service territory.

CPS Energy plans to use the 900 MHz spectrum to strengthen operational resilience and reliability as it modernizes grid infrastructure and integrates new technologies. The network will form part of the utility’s broader digital transformation and grid modernization efforts.

The transaction expands the use of 900 MHz private wireless networks among electric utilities in Texas and nationwide. Anterix reported that CPS Energy is the first utility to advance under its Accelerator program, which supports private wireless deployments for critical infrastructure operators.

CPS Energy provides electric and natural gas service to the San Antonio region, serving more than 970,000 electric customers and 390,000 natural gas customers.
