The Chicago City Council has approved a plan to acquire the Greyhound bus terminal in the West Loop for $19.2 million, preserving intercity bus service at a facility that serves approximately 450,000 passengers annually.
The purchase forms part of a broader $50 million initiative to acquire and renovate the terminal at 630 W. Harrison Street. The city plans to fund the acquisition and improvements through an expansion of the Canal/Congress Tax Increment Financing district. Under the agreement, Greyhound will continue operating the terminal for one year following the sale while city officials identify a long-term operator for the facility. Revenue generated from bus carriers using the terminal is expected to support ongoing operating costs.
Planned upgrades include improvements to heating and air conditioning systems, lighting, security cameras, and passenger facilities. The renovation program aims to modernize the terminal and improve the customer experience for travelers using intercity bus services.
The terminal faced possible closure after its previous lease expired, raising concerns about the future of intercity bus travel in Chicago. In addition to Greyhound, the facility serves Burlington Trailways, Jefferson Lines, FlixBus, and Barons Bus.
