The Monterey Peninsula Airport District has awarded Hensel Phelps the contract to construct a new passenger terminal at Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), marking the next phase in the airport’s ongoing modernization plan. The project is part of the FAA-aligned Metamorphosis Safety Enhancement Program.

The 62,000-square-foot terminal will include five passenger boarding bridges and is designed to improve safety, capacity, and traveler experience. Architecture firm HOK developed the design based on public input gathered during 2023 community workshops. The updated layout will enhance circulation, expand seating and dining areas, and reflect regional character and accessibility priorities.

Hensel Phelps was selected through a competitive procurement process and will begin with pre-construction services such as reviewing design plans and engaging trade partners to establish final pricing. The full construction budget will be presented for board approval in a future phase.

The airport handles over 600,000 passengers per year and offers service to nine nonstop destinations. The terminal redevelopment is expected to support both growing passenger volumes and updated safety requirements.

Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2025.
