Amtrak has awarded pre-construction and management contracts for the Sawtooth Bridges replacement project in New Jersey. Skanska and a Walsh-Herzog joint venture will handle pre-construction activities, while Sawtooth Partners, a joint venture between STV and AECOM, will manage the project and construction.

The new bridges will double the existing track capacity in the most congested 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor. The upgrades will increase train speeds from 60 miles per hour to 90 miles per hour, improve reliability, and enhance overall operations. The project will be delivered in multiple phases.

Originally built in 1907, the Sawtooth Bridges currently support over 400 daily trains operated by Amtrak and New Jersey Transit along the Northeast Corridor. The replacement project will construct three new bridges along a 1.9-mile stretch in Kearny, New Jersey, between Newark Penn Station and Secaucus Junction.
