American Water has announced plans to invest between $46 billion and $48 billion over the next ten years to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure across its national service territory. The investment program will begin in 2026 and continue through 2036. American Water expects the upgrades to improve system reliability, reduce water losses, strengthen climate resilience, and support long-term service demand.
The capital program will fund system replacements, leak reduction programs, efficiency improvements, and resilience upgrades across drinking water and wastewater networks serving customers in 14 states and several military installations. It plans to deploy acoustic sensors, drones, infrared imaging, and smart meters to detect leaks and monitor system performance.
American Water will finance the program through long-term capital expenditures as part of its regulated utility investment plan.
