The Alabama Port Authority has begun demolition and reconstruction of Pier B South at the Port of Mobile, launching Phase I of a multi-year general cargo modernization program.
The $100 million project will redevelop the historic pier, originally built in the 1920s, into a modern, high-capacity general cargo berth. The upgraded facility will support breakbulk cargo, including forest products and steel, and improve handling efficiency at the port.
The new Pier B South will include 1,500 linear feet of dock structure designed to support loads of up to 1,500 pounds per square foot. The berth will accommodate mobile harbor cranes, feature rail service, support shore power, and integrate with the port’s existing general cargo terminals.
RJ Baggett Construction is serving as the lead contractor. Construction is expected to take approximately three years, with phased delivery as work progresses.
The Pier B South redevelopment represents the first phase of the Alabama Port Authority’s broader General Cargo Modernization Program. Additional efforts include warehouse upgrades to add more than 110,000 square feet of capacity by the first half of 2026 and a harbor optimization study conducted with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
