Amtrak has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of the Dock Bridge, a key rail crossing on the Northeast Corridor between Newark and Harrison in New Jersey. The $242 million project will upgrade the nearly century-old structure and improve reliability on one of the country’s busiest passenger rail corridors.
Construction will strengthen the bridge’s steel structure and replace track, overhead catenary equipment, and signal systems. The project will also convert the existing movable bridge into a fixed-span structure. Amtrak expects major construction to begin by the end of 2026 and complete the work in 2029.
The Federal Railroad Administration is providing approximately $188 million for the project. NJ TRANSIT, PATH, and Amtrak will fund the remaining cost. Amtrak awarded the construction contract to Skanska and selected LiRo-Hill to provide project management services.
More than 700 trains cross Dock Bridge every day. The bridge also serves over 200,000 daily Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT, and PATH passengers. The rehabilitation will reduce service disruptions and improve long-term safety and reliability across this section of the Northeast Corridor
