Sound Transit has opened the Crosslake Connection, completing the final segment of the Link 2 Line across Lake Washington. The $3.82 billion project delivers the world’s first electrified light rail system operating on a floating bridge along Interstate 90.
The project includes a seven-mile extension with new stations at Mercer Island and Judkins Park. It connects Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, and integrates with the existing Link 1 Line. The expansion forms part of a broader regional light rail network spanning approximately 60 miles.
Construction began in 2017 and concluded in 2026. Sound Transit delivered the project in collaboration with multiple partners, including STV and Mott MacDonald through the Northwest Transit Systems Partners joint venture. The team oversaw systems integration, including traction power, signaling, and communications infrastructure.
The extension supports electrified rail operations across a floating bridge, requiring specialized engineering for dynamic conditions. The system includes overhead contact infrastructure, real-time monitoring, and integrated safety systems to ensure reliable service.
The project improves regional mobility by providing a high-capacity alternative to congested roadways. It is expected to serve up to 50,000 daily riders and operate with frequent service throughout the day. The connection will reduce travel times, improve access to jobs and services, and support long-term sustainable transportation goals.
