The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has selected a joint venture between Skanska Civil Northeast and Koch to deliver the North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement project under a $1.06 billion design-build contract. The project will upgrade critical rail infrastructure across Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.
The project will replace the existing Draw One Bridge over the Charles River, along with Signal Tower A and associated track and signal systems. The scope includes construction of new movable bridge structures carrying six tracks, replacement of trestles and fender systems, and demolition of existing bridge spans and infrastructure.
The project also includes track and signal upgrades extending approximately 1.5 miles from North Station. Additional work includes reconstruction of station platforms, development of a new Tower A control facility, and upgrades to signal equipment and related infrastructure. Crews will also modify the North Bank Pedestrian Bridge to accommodate the new alignment.
The MBTA will deliver the project under a design-build model, with a contract duration of six and a half years from notice to proceed. The project is in the procurement and award phase, with construction to follow.
