The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Commerce have launched a public-private partnership with SoftBank and AEP Ohio to redevelop federal land and expand energy infrastructure in southern Ohio.

The project will support the development of a 10 GW data center campus at the Portsmouth Site in Pike County. It will also include the construction of 10 GW of new power generation capacity, including 9.2 GW of natural gas generation, to supply electricity to the facility and the regional grid.

SB Energy will lead power generation development and invest $33.3 billion in new natural gas infrastructure. The company will also invest $4.2 billion with AEP Ohio to build and upgrade transmission infrastructure across the region.

The project will modernize grid infrastructure, expand transmission capacity, and integrate new generation into the local power system. Developers will make excess generation and transmission capacity available to the grid to support regional electricity demand.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026. The project will include site redevelopment, environmental remediation, and infrastructure upgrades at the Portsmouth Site. The development will support advanced computing infrastructure and large-scale data center operations. It will also enable research and innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and advanced energy systems.
