Richmond International Airport has unveiled a $253 million terminal expansion and modernization plan to improve passenger flow and accommodate growing travel demand in Central Virginia.

The project will add approximately 103,000 square feet of new terminal space and renovate about 84,000 square feet of existing facilities. Plans also include construction of a 29,000-square-foot mezzanine to support expanded passenger services. It will consolidate the airport’s security checkpoints into a single screening area with up to 14 lanes. The redesign will allow passengers to move more easily between concourses while reducing congestion at security.

The expansion will also create additional space for concessions and passenger amenities, including potential lounge facilities. The upgrades aim to improve the passenger experience while preparing the airport for continued traffic growth.

The Capital Region Airport Commission is overseeing the project. Gresham Smith is providing architectural and engineering services for the design phase. Airport officials expect to award a construction contract in summer 2026. Construction is projected to take between 24 and 30 months once work begins.

Passenger traffic at Richmond International Airport has continued to increase in recent years. The airport recorded more than 450,000 travelers in October 2025.
