Comcast has begun upgrading broadband infrastructure in public and affordable housing properties across Massachusetts under the state’s Residential Retrofit Program.

The project will modernize internet wiring and network equipment in more than 40,000 housing units statewide to deliver high-speed, symmetrical broadband service and building-wide Wi-Fi coverage. Initial upgrades are underway at properties in Cambridge, Boston, Haverhill, Lowell, Somerville, and Springfield.

The program has awarded nearly $70 million to support the infrastructure upgrades. The U.S. Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund, provided through the American Rescue Plan Act, finances the program. The Massachusetts Broadband Institute administers the funding through the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

Comcast serves as the implementing provider and installs internal wiring, network equipment, and in-building connectivity systems. The upgrades began in 2024 and will continue through the first phase of the Residential Retrofit Program.
