American Airlines and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport have committed to a $4 billion expansion of Terminal F. The project significantly revises earlier plans and positions Terminal F as the airport’s new flagship facility.
Originally envisioned as a 15-gate terminal under a 2023 lease agreement, the updated plan expands the scope to 31 gates and accelerates the development timeline. The entire terminal will be operated by American Airlines, which has extended its use and lease agreement with DFW through 2043.
The revised design includes expanded international operations, upgraded passenger amenities, new check-in areas, and a dedicated parking garage. Terminal F will also feature a new Skylink station and a pedestrian connection to Terminal D, improving connectivity across the airport.
The Terminal F investment forms part of DFW’s larger $12 billion capital program. Construction began in 2024. The initial phase is scheduled to open in 2027, with additional features to follow in later phases. Innovation Next+, a joint venture of Archer Western, Turner Construction, H.J. Russell & Co., Phillips May Corp., and Carcon Industries, is delivering the Terminal F concourse and Skylink station. PGAL, Gensler, and Muller2 are leading the architectural design.
The expansion supports both the airport’s growing traffic and American’s hub strategy. About 60 per cent of DFW’s total passenger traffic consists of connecting passengers, and the Dallas–Fort Worth metro area continues to rank among the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.
