New Flyer of America has received an order from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority for 100 forty-foot transit buses. The order includes 75 Xcelsior hybrid-electric buses and 25 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric buses exercised under an existing five-year contract.

The purchase will replace end-of-life vehicles and support fleet modernization across the Washington metropolitan region. Metro operates one of the nation’s largest bus networks, serving communities in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

Federal, state, and local funding will support the procurement, including grants from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Program. The buses will enter service as Metro continues to transition its fleet toward lower-emission vehicles.

The order follows a base purchase of 100 hybrid-electric buses placed in February 2025. Delivery schedules will align with Metro’s ongoing fleet replacement program.
