The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has invested around $38 million into Amtrak’s Borealis Service. This service connects Chicago to Minneapolis, with eight stops in Wisconsin. The federal funding will support the expansion of Borealis Service.

The funding comes from the USDOT’s Restoration and Enhancement Grants Program (R&E Program), which helps cover operating costs for new, restored, or enhanced intercity passenger rail services. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes $102 billion in rail funding, including $250 million for the R&E Program.

The new funding will support the Amtrak Borealis Service through years three to six, with contributions from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois covering the non-R&E funding share.
