The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) launched a new program called TSA Gold+ to expand private-sector participation in airport security screening operations across the United States. The initiative builds on the agency’s existing Screening Partnership Program, which currently operates at 20 U.S. airports.
Under the new program, airports could use private investment to fund checkpoint upgrades, screening equipment, and security technology. TSA said the approach could accelerate airport modernization and reduce delays tied to federal funding and staffing shortages.
The agency said airports participating in TSA Gold+ would gain greater flexibility to tailor screening operations to local needs. Proposed upgrades could include advanced scanners, expanded screening lanes, artificial intelligence tools, and redesigned passenger screening areas.
Unlike the current Screening Partnership Program, private contractors under TSA Gold+ could manage screening equipment and introduce new technologies directly. TSA will continue to oversee security operations and regulatory compliance.
The agency plans to discuss the program with airport officials and security contractors during an industry event at its Virginia headquarters. TSA said the initiative aims to improve screening capacity, reduce wait times, and support growing passenger volumes.
The program has drawn criticism from labor groups representing federal TSA officers. Critics raised concerns about accountability, operational oversight, and the use of private contractors for sensitive aviation security functions.
The White House’s proposed budget projects approximately $52 million in savings through expanded privatization of airport screening services and increased participation in the Screening Partnership Program at smaller airports.
Airports currently using private screening contractors include San Francisco International Airport, Kansas City International Airport, and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. Federal screening operations remain in place at most US airports.
