Thruway Authority Starts $7.8 Million Bridge Replacement Project in Newburgh, NY

The New York State Thruway Authority has begun a $7.8 million project to replace the Meadow Hill Road bridge over I-87 in the Town of Newburgh, Orange County. The 72-year-old bridge will close to all traffic beginning the afternoon of Friday, June 13, and will remain closed until summer 2026. Crews will demolish the existing structure in July.

The new structure will carry two 11-foot travel lanes, wider shoulders, and a 5-foot-5-inch sidewalk on the north side to enhance pedestrian access. The vertical clearance over the Thruway will increase from 14 feet 3 inches to 16 feet 10 inches to reduce the risk of bridge strikes. The new bridge will have an expected service life of 75 years.

Approximately 4,100 vehicles use the Meadow Hill Road bridge daily. Signed detours using local and state roads—including State Routes 52, 300, and 17K—will remain in effect throughout the closure.

Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors, Inc. of Glenmont, NY is serving as the project contractor. The Thruway Authority is funding the project through toll revenue.
